The Vortex Wind Tunnel

Plain and simple, today sucked.

It royally sucked, big time.  We got lots (and I mean lots) of snow dumped on us today, and it still is coming down right now as of 9pm. Tomorrow morning is not going to be a good one either.  Our temperature was 12 degrees today, but I am sure it was much colder with the wind chill.  Tuesday’s temps are supposed to be zero, nice eh?

All I did today, was shovel snow.  Fifteen minutes later, I had to head back out to clean off more.  The wind was so severe today that it blew right through my snow suit, so it felt like I was just wearing my jeans outside.  I got cold quick, and my fingers even felt frost bitten even with my Thinsulate gloves on.

The wind blew so hard and severe between the houses in the neighborhood like you were standing in a vortex wind tunnel.  You cleared the drive between your house & your neighbors, turned around, and the snow drift appeared again.  This was my day today.  It stunk.

At one point, I came in and disrobed all of my snow suit, and sat by my little heater to get warm, and I noticed that I had two different socks on. Ok, that stinks, but that just is yet another sucky thing that happened today.

Moments later, a heard a huge bang from outside, and when I looked out, I caught one of our city’s snow plow guys driving away.  He hit our mailbox with his plow,  and ripped off the door to our mailbox and kept going.  I slipped on my flip flops that were sitting by the back door, grabbed my coat and hat, and ran out the back door to catch him. When I got to the end of our driveway, I noticed that all the outgoing mail I put in our mailbox earlier was now laying in the middle of the snow covered street.  Yikes!  I grabbed it up quickly, and ran down the street to catch this moron.  I caught up to him as he was backing up on the side street and told him he hit our mailbox.  He replied and said “no, I did not hit it, it was just the snow that hit it”.  I told him that the door was ripped off and that all of my outgoing mail was in the middle of the road.  He drove over to see what happened and after he saw the mailbox, he said “I must have hit it”.  At least he was apologetic and told me to call the city’s building department to get it replaced.  I did in fact place that call, and hoped that they would replace it today.  They did not.

My next door neighbor arrived home only to find over a foot of snow in her driveway, and when she pulled in, she got stuck.  Figured that would happen.  She got out and shoveled in hopes that she could get in the drive, and no matter how much she shoveled, she was still stuck. She ended up leaving her car at the end of her driveway, then went out again. She left the shoveling for her husband to tackle when he got home as it was too deep for either of us to shovel by hand.  What I had to laugh at, was when she said to me “all I want to do is kick something”, and that is the exact phrase I told my boyfriend earlier in the day.

You just get so frustrated when the snow comes down this fast, the wind blows right through you & in your face, and it makes you feel that no matter how well you clear off your drive, that within minutes it will be covered again.

The vortex wind tunnel won today.

Festivus Snow Days

It comes as no surprise that we got snow, and LOTS of it!  We watched it come down the entire day yesterday with such vengence.  Definitely over 6″ for sure hit our town.  It was pretty to watch as we sat in a warm house drinking our warm coffee, but having to clean off your drive and sidewalk was a different story.

It was that thick heavy snow that blanketed everything. Tree branches were heavily covered in thick white snow, even a deer we saw had snow piled up on its head while he stood in our neighbors backyard eating his bushes.

Let it Snow

Our neighbors had a lot of fun in the snow with friends building snowmen across the street.  It was fun to watch as they rolled the snow balls around the ground creating the perfect snowman body parts.  One after the other, they built three snowmen and even a snow turtle!

One snowman, or snow woman, was built with anatomical parts! And she was even a smoker with a cigarette hanging out the side of her snow face! (gotta love snow humor, eh!)

We had our neighbors over for pizza the other night, before all the snow hit us, and we dined at the table adorned in red & gold. Who said eating pizza can’t be fancy?

After dinner, we took a ride to see a holiday light show.  We just love how this guy decorates his house and yard with lights!  When you sit in front of his house, you turn your radio to a certain frequency and listen to Christmas music as you watch his light show!  It is a spectacular light show to watch!

Here is the link to his light show from last year:

Nikita got a new sweater too when Bella got hers, but it is not as easy as Bella’s was to put on, but she loves it!  It definitely makes it easier to dry her off when she comes in from playing in all the snow.  The sweater provides warmth, and a good shield from snow balls in her fur.

The pictures of Nikita (above) are before all of the snow hit us.  Now, the backyard is piled high with the white stuff.  Snow forts were built so they could have a shoveled off area to potty in, and the snow is packed down into the ground from all of our trips outside.

After all the playing was done for the day, Nikita took advantage of her quiet time and napped with her favorite teddy bear.

What a week we had with all the snow and excitement!  As the snow is still coming down, we can take a little break for now as the driveway is finally all cleared again, until we have to head back out and do it all over again.  Just think, Winter has not even officially begun yet!

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Baby, it’s cold outside!

That is an understatement for sure.  It is officially 21 degrees here in Cleveland, OH this morning, the winds are fierce, and we got snow.  We were surprised when we woke up that we did not get the amount of snow that we thought we were going to get, as the snow was blowing around last night so badly.  The ground is covered, but not enough that I have to shovel the driveway, phew.  But the cold 21 degree temps is what is brutal.

The dogs love it!  And they should!  Anyone with four legs would run like crazy through all that white stuff with a great big smile on their face.  It’s funny to watch when their paws touch the snow.  It’s like something “clicks” in them to say…”RUN” and run fast, and run in circles!  I love watching them play in the snow and grunt along the way. (I always call them “snow grunts”)  Zooming in the snow is the thing to do.

I caught the dogs checking out their stockings the other day, and also sniffing the gifts under the tree.  Of course, I had to grab my camera to snag a few pics, then I actually got them to lay down in front of the tree for me too.  I started to wonder if they could smell their “treats” inside their stocking and if I should hide them elsewhere, but I think they will be ok since neither Nikita or Bella touch things like that.  So they are safe.

We did get a new addition to our Christmas decorations that peeked the dogs curiosity.  We got an adorable lighted Rudolph that now stands next to our Christmas tree!  Rudolph’s nose even blinks red!  Both Nikita and Bella were not sure what to think of him as we put him together in the kitchen, and they did what any dog would do… they sniffed Rudolph’s butt!

Today is all about keeping warm and trying to keep the trips outside to a minimal, but that will never happen, as I have already been outside with the dogs about seven times.  I am starting to think that it’s not because they have to “go”, but rather because they want to run around in the snow. Hmmm.  I don’t blame them though, as they love the snow & playing in it. If all else fails, I’ll pour myself a glass of wine.

Stay warm & cozy!

The Ever Changing Weather in Cleveland, OH

If you live here, you are used to the weather changes.  Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and orange barrel season where the road construction crews feel the need to bring out the orange barrels only when the weather gets bad.  The photo below are the pumpkins sitting on my neighbors front porch.  I could not resist taking a photo of them freezing in the snow.

Pumpkins on Porch

Two days ago, I mowed the lawn & blew all the leaves out of the yard, doing the final lawn cleanup for the year.  Last night it snowed, and snowed a lot. We woke up to everything covered in white.  Simple beautiful, but I am not ready for it yet.  It is around 34 degrees here and the wind just blows right through you.

When I took the dogs out this morning, this was the first time this year that they saw snow this deep and they WENT CRAZY!

Bella always has to know where Nikita and I am when we head outside, and she runs to the bedroom window to look out.  When she sees us coming back in, she runs down the hall and sits by the backdoor, acting like she was there the whole time.  (I know better)

Bella ran in circles so many times that she got me dizzy and I had to stop her or I would have fallen over.  Nikita wanted to “dig” cause that is what she loves to do the best when she sees snow.  (I always make her huge piles of snow to dig in and she always comes up covered white with tons of snow on top of her nose)  They are like little kids playing in the snow and I love watching them run and jump and have a good time.

The skies are filled with those huge “snow clouds” as we would call them, and we know that we’re in for more snow when we see them.  The photo below, looks like Nikita is trying to catch snowflakes on her tongue!  LOL

Both Nikita and Bella and napping right now, conserving their energy for later when our second round of snow hits us.  These dogs just love the snow!

Mother Nature Can Be Cruel

Nikita playing in the snow
picasion Nikita playing in the snow

Well, it’s supposed to be Spring around here, but Mother Nature has a different plan for us.  Instead of watching all the Spring bulbs popping out of the ground, which they are, and watching them start to bloom, they are covered up under a pile of snow. One year ago around this time, we had temps in the 80’s, which normally does not happen and our trees bloomed early because they were confused.  So, one year later, instead of our weather getting warmer as the days of the calendar pass us by, we are still dealing with shoveling snow and low temps.

Our poor little Spring blooms that have peeked out of the ground, are stunned by the cold and the blanket of snow that covers them, and will probably not bloom this year. The dogs, however, are still enjoying the snow on the ground.  They run and play, eat the snow (hopefully not the yellow snow), and love digging in the snow piles.  It is hard to get them to come back inside after enjoying a romp in the white stuff.

But, while inside, I still need to constantly watch our little puppy Bella, as what you need to do for any pup.  When Bella disappears, that usually means trouble.  I always think the best, but when I go investigate on what she is up to, most of the time she is being sneaky and up to something.  I usually do a toy head count and know which one is gone from the toy box, and then I find her…. laying so innocently in the other room ripping apart a toy and yanking the stuffing out.  I have seen my fair share of “stuffing” in poop piles, and have had enough of that sight, but as to why they do this still is a mystery to me.

Pet Hospital Patient

Our “Pet Hospital” which resides on top of the fridge is always jammed packed with patients who need bandaged and sewed, and although I try my best, sometimes a “limb” needs to be surgically removed.  Oh, those poor toys that sit in the toy box missing an arm or a leg, a eye has been sewn shut, and they start to look like Franken-Toys with all the battle scars across their chest.  Poor poor toys, you sure have been through a lot, but you still hang in there, and have high fears the next time you are yanked out of the toy box wondering if “this” will be the day that we have to put you down.  Bella is always innocent.  She gives me that “it wasn’t me” look, and always points the finger at Nikita.  We know better.  Nikita hasn’t ripped up a toy in a long time, so we know who the culprit is that is doing all the damage to their poor toys.  The Pet Hospital is always open for business.

The time it took me to write this post… another toy lost its life!  RIP orange ball.  For sure, more stuffing will be found later today in a steaming pile of poo.

NIKITA SNOW3 12-30-12

Since the day after Christmas, we have received our fair share (and more) of that cold white stuff they call snow!  We didn’t mind, because Daddy was home on vacation and we had no urgent place to go, so we actually got to enjoy the snow falling all around us.  Sure, we had to shovel, shovel and shovel almost every day, pulled the snow blower out too since the snow was quite heavy at times, but it was beautiful to see how it covered EVERYTHING white.  We surely put our snow pants to work as they kept us warm, actually too warm, as we scraped the driveway and sidewalk for the third, fourth…uh we lost track of how many times, but nonetheless, we kept the cold at bay and away from us.

BELLA SNOW6 12-30-12

Both Nikita and Bella are having the time of their lives playing in the snow.  We still have to teach Bella to not eat the yellow snow, as she has not figured that one out yet, but she loves to run and jump in the snow, and stops to take huge bites of snow when she gets tired.   Nikita on the other hand, is a digger.  When she heads outside, she finds the huge snow mounds that we pile up and starts her hole brigade.  Dig, dig, dig, as the snow goes flying through her legs, then her head disappears into her treasured hole that she has made.  When she pulls her head out, she is covered in snow and stands there so proudly on top of the snow mountain as to say “look what I did“!

What is priceless in the end?  When you find your little furry four-legged kids passed out on the floor, rejuvenating for their next trip outside.  (which will most likely be in 20 minutes, phew)

We spent our New Year’s Eve safe at home, watching it snow (again) and were glad that we were not out on the town driving on the snow covered roads.  We enjoyed our time with our dogs and watched the two hour special in memory of Dick Clark.  We had all the good intentions of watching the ball drop at midnight, but like every other new years arrival, we missed it, as we fell asleep. We did, however, get woken up when both Nikita and Bella started growling at the fireworks that were going off in the neighborhood.  We chuckled, and fell back asleep.  All in all, a great and wonderful end to another year with all the people we love, and our special four-legged kids by our side.  Priceless.

Winter Wonderland

BLIZZARD 12-26-12

This is the snow cleared from our driveway today!

We had the most wonderful Christmas with our family.  The dinner smorgasbord that Grandma had prepared for us was so wonderful and if anyone left the table hungry, that was their own fault!  Grandma made us her homemade stuffed cabbage for Christmas and we always fill our plates real high with them because they are so delicious.  The wonderful gifts that each of us received were truly practical and things that we all needed.  Gifts from the heart are so appreciated as they mean the world to us.  (Thank you Grandma for the wonderful meal!)  And, a great BIG thank you to Daddy for making our Christmas very special for all of us!  You mean the world to us!

Daddy Got an Awesome Alarm Clock

Daddy Got an Awesome Alarm Clock

We were so lucky that the weather held out for our travels on Christmas, because today we got hit with a Blizzard!  It has been snowing here since 9:15am and has not stopped.  The snow blower got a real workout today for sure, and so did Daddy, as we both cleared the driveway a few times during the day.  You can hear the murmur of snow blowers all around the neighborhood as everyone was digging out.  Approximately 8+ inches of snow has fallen here so far and we can’t wait to see what we will find tomorrow morning when we wake.  As for Nikita and Bella, they absolutely LOVE the snow and can’t get enough of running through it, eating it, digging in the snow piles, and running in circles all around the yard.  We just keep telling them to not eat the yellow snow!

Digging Out

We got the snow that the weather forecaster said we were going to get, now we have to wait to see what will be dumped on us today.  After spending the entire day yesterday shoveling the driveway to keep up with the snowfall, I am glad that when we woke this morning, that there is not much more to clean up on the driveway, but more snow is on its way.

I was enjoying my morning coffee early this morning, after taking Bella outside and when I looked out the kitchen window, I saw that one of our local police cars was stuck in the snow on the side street to the park that is across the street from our house.  I sat there for a few minutes, laughing, but then I felt bad that I laughed.  I bundled myself up in my snow pants and grabbed the snow shovel by the back door and went over to see if I could assist.  Another officer was there too trying to help, but his car was stuck in the deep snow.  They said that they called a tow truck to pull him out and that it should be arriving shortly.  The officer that was stuck said that in 14 years on the force, he has never had to get towed out of the snow!  They were pleasantly surprised that I came to their assistance, and thanked me and wished me a Merry Christmas.  I feel better now for going over to assist them, although I did nothing to help, it was the right thing to do.  Merry Christmas to you police officer who was stuck in the snow!

Even Birdies Can Get Snowed In

Snowed in Birdies

Woke up this morning to a “White Out”!  This is super crazy because yesterday I was running around on grass, eating mulch, sticks & leaves, and today, I am jumping through mounds and mounds of snow!  Man, I love this stuff!  Even the birdies got snowed in today – look how much snow is on top of their feeder!  Yikes!  It was really cool today when I was outside playing, because a bunch of huge black birdies flew right over my head and I just sat there and watched them fly and turned my head to see them disappear into the trees.  I think they were trying to dive-bomb me because they were squawking all sorts of nonsense at me.  Not sure what they were saying, because I don’t speak “birdie” language – I only woof and growl.

Our backyard covered in snow

Mommy finally got all of the snow off the driveway, and it took a few times to do so because the snow was that really heavy stuff, now Daddy can just drive right into the garage with no problems when he gets home.  Hopefully his ride home will be a safe one, but I am sure it will be because I have been watching the snow plows go by and they are doing a great job of clearing off the roads.  Now, everyone can get into work with no problems, and will be able to also get home safe too!  Rumble rumble rumble… comes another plow!  Gotta go run to the front window!

I can’t wait until Daddy gets home!  I always greet him with such a warm welcome!  Mommy always tells me “Daddy’s Home” and when she says that, I hear the rumble of his car driving in and I get all pumped up!  I hang over the puppy gate by the back door and listen intensly for his footsteps, then I hear the door knob turn, and then he appears – YEAH it’s Daddy!  Only a few more hours to go until I get to see him!

Deer hide behind our fence & try to scare me

Have a great day & stay warm!

Get out Your Snow Shovels…Again!

My New Bone!

It’s been raining here for at least two days straight, and yesterday we heard on the news that we are supposed to get up to 8+ inches by the time we wake up on Friday morning.  Well, I just looked out the front window and the rain has now just turned into that white stuff again!  Oh boy!  The drive in tomorrow morning for Daddy is not going to be a fun one!  And Mommy has already put away her snow pants because she was hoping that the snow was finally going away, not yet at least Mommy.

Mommy and I did some errands today and I got to go bye bye again!  Everytime I hear the car keys I get all excited and jump all around.  Mommy always makes sure to take a bottled water and snacks for me when we do errands, just in case I get thirsty, and the snacks are for when I am good (which I always am!)  And, since I was such a good puppy today, I got a brand new red Milkbone squeaky toy!  Yeah!  I could not wait to get home to play with it, and when I did…..I ran all over the house, throwing it up in the air, and squeaking the heck out of it as I ran.  (if you can hear me now)

I also had another growling fit at those stupid laundry baskets today.  I am starting to think that Mommy is placing those things on their side on purpose just to get me going.  I think she thinks it’s funny, but all I do is run away from them, peak around the corner, and growl and growl at them.

Well, for now, I am going to sit by the front window and watch the snow come down, and know that when the driveway turns white, I can pee right outside the back door!  LOL  (I don’t do this all the time, just when it is covered with the white stuff)  Uh oh, I’ve gotta go….. I hear Mommy coming up the stairs and I don’t want her to catch me on the computer again.  I’ll talk to you all later!

Wet Snowy Puppy Kisses to you,

Ah, a new head rest!

American Idol Puppy

Modeling my Fleece Sweatshirt

I’ve been watching American Idol with Daddy & Mommy now every week, and I feel that I am one American Idol Puppy!   WOW!  What a whirlwind of a day we are having over here!  I went to bed last night with my favorite blue & white squeaky bone, and woke up to over 9+ inches of snow!  Holy Crap!  Everytime it snows a lot and I head outside, when I see the white stuff on the driveway, I’ve gotta go.  Daddy & Mommy always laugh at me that I can’t wait until I run around the corner of the house to the backyard to go, and I just squat in the drive.  (I know, I’m funny)   This weather here in Cleveland is ridiculous.  Just the other day I was sitting by the back door catching sun rays on my furry face, the next day it rained, and now today, Mommy had to use the snow blower 4 times to keep the driveway clean.  Mommy also took some great photographs of how much snow we got in the backyard.  You will all be surprised!  She knew that you would not believe us on how much we got, so she took a tape measure out with her to prove it!

1 Foot 7 Inches in Backyard

The sound of running water makes me now run to see where it is, ever since I started to drink out of the sprayer in the kitchen sink.  Now, even when Daddy or Mommy use the sink in the bathroom, I come running and jump up on the counter just to try to get some of that nice cool running H20!  Mommy can’t even wash the dishes without me checking out what is going on up there!  I am one inquisitive puppy, gotta check out what’s going on!

I do have to laugh though at some of my antics (what Mommy calls them) as I feel like I am the funniest puppy around!  Just like when I go grab my little squeaky round play balls and then walk over to either Daddy or Mommy with it, then instead of giving it to them to throw it – – I tease them!  I act like I am going to give it to them, then I turn away quickly and run under the table, then I circle around again, and do the same thing.  After a few times of doing this, Mommy & Daddy act like they are ignoring me (they think that I don’t know they are doing this on purpose, but I know what they are doing! LOL)  and then I finally give in and give them the ball to throw for me.  We can do this for hours! Well, maybe not hours, but until this little puppy gets tired and has to lay down.

Having fun running down the hallway

Then, I am set into such a routine now for bedtime.  When it gets to be “that time of night”, I always hear Daddy say “Time for Bed”, and he starts to pick up my blue & white squeaky bone, but sometimes I get it before him, and we head down the hallway to bed.  Then Mommy comes in (after she sets up the coffee maker for Daddy for the morning – Aw, that is so nice that Mommy does that for Daddy) and Mommy takes off my collar.  Every night, and I mean every night, when she takes off my collar I have to first sniff it, give it a lick, and then give her permission to put it on the night stand.  Then Mommy crawls into bed (sometimes I have to move to give her room) and Daddy leans over to kiss Mommy good night.  Every time I see Daddy kiss Mommy, I have to get up and run over to get in between them on the bed and give them puppy smoochies too!  They laugh every night that I do this as if it is the first time they are seeing it.  Then I head down to the foot of the bed, where I lay my head over Mommy’s feet and I’m ready for bed!  But before I fall fast asleep, I have to catch a few minutes of “Everybody Loves Raymond”.  Gosh that guy is funny!  I try to keep my eyes open, but it is useless as I fall fast asleep like a good little puppy.  Until I hear the BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ of Daddy’s alarm going off.  Rats, and I was in the middle of a good dream too!

Gotta go for now, I hear Mommy calling me but I will keep you up to date on what I get into next!  Puppy Smoochies to you – Love, Nikita
