Fall is Definitely Upon Us

The weather has done a 360 on us here in Cleveland, the winds have whipped up some unbelievable arctic air drafts over the weekend, the leaves are coming down so fast that they blanket the entire yard, and we have to run interference from the chipmunks nibbling on our pumpkins.  Every time I need to go outside, I get so distracted because just when I find a spot to go, a leaf blows by me and I have to chase it.  Ok, I found another spot to go, swoooosh there goes another leaf – gotta go get it.  Mommy was getting annoyed with me this weekend as it took double the time for me to go since there was so much “action” in the yard.  I heard her saying out loud, “what is it with dogs anyways that they have to sniff and sniff and sniff the same spot a thousand times before they actually go?”  I don’t know why we walk all over the exact same spots we just sniffed, only to turn around and do it again, sniff sniff sniff, oh wait, did I miss a spot, while Mommy is standing there behind me in the pouring rain getting soaked waiting for me to find the right spot so I can go.  I guess the world will never know why us dogs do this, but we do.

As you can see from the photograph above, Daddy’s pumpkin is almost completely orange and he will be cutting it off the vine soon.  (we even saw 2 little ghosts in his pumpkin patch too)  The vines are all dying and shriveling up which marks the end to this pumpkin plant for the year.  We had a fun time watching it grow from a tiny little sprout, to what we think is about a 10+ lb. pumpkin.  One thing that I never knew, or would have never known if we never tried growing our own pumpkin, was the fact that at the bottom of every pumpkin is where a flower once bloomed & was pollinated.  If the flower does not get pollinated, then the pumpkin will not grow.  Interesting fact, one that we did not know.  So when you are at the store picking out your pumpkin, turn it over and look at the bottom and you will know that a flower once bloomed there!

Mommy finished her EEK and we have it sitting on our bookshelf.  It is amazing how good she has become with a jigsaw and she surprises Daddy with all of her creations.  She also made us a bat for our back door and stenciled “Beware” on it.  Now comes the fun part, since Daddy & Mommy has sold tons of their wood tombstones already, she has been trying to keep their own supply of wood tombstones up so that they have some to put in their yard for Halloween.  Mommy has to start painting all of their supply of tombstones now to get them ready for the yard, and she will most definitely take a photograph or two of how they look out in the yard.  They can’t wait to see how it all ties into together with their other Halloween props!  Even our “Uncle Dave” emailed us and said that he wants to come over to see our yard for Halloween!  I hope he does stop by as we will make sure we have a candy bag ready for him!

Mommy created another interesting dinner item:  Cheese & Garlic Pita Wedges, and she thought that she would share the recipe with you.  Go ahead and make some tonight or have them with your spaghetti or chilli, as these would go nicely with them.

4 White Pita Bread Slices
4 Ounces Butter, melted
3 Cloves Garlic, crushed
2 Tablespoons chopped fresh Basil
1/3 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese

How to Make:
Split the pita bread in half, cut each half into 4 wedges.  Combine the butter, garlic and basil, brush over cut side of bread wedges, then sprinkle them with Parmesan cheese.  Place in single layer on cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until crisp.   NOTE:  You can also make these using tortillas if you don’t have pita bread.

Anyhow, I hope everyone had a great weekend and stayed nice & warm, as Mommy is going to pull out my winter fleece sweater for me to wear soon.  Keep your finger crossed too because the Browns play the Titans today at 1:00pm – Go Browns!

THINGS That Amaze Puppies

T.G.I.F.!  It’s interesting what puppies find amusing.  We can find the silliest things around the house that interest us, things that you would not even look at, things that you would pass by….not us!  Like me for instance, I caught my shadow on the floor the other day when sitting in front of the kitchen window.  I moved from left to right, bobbed my head up and down, and even wiggled my ears to watch that shadow of mine move.  I thought it was funny.  (the shadow to the right of my fluffy head was the plant in the window

Gotta catch that circle on the wall....

Then Mommy was washing dishes and I found something else amusing.  Normally when she washes dishes, I jump up on the counter to snag a drink of water from the faucet, but today something else caught my eye.  Something was dancing all over the walls and even on the ceiling and I had to try to catch it!  I ran all around the kitchen from one end to the other, and I tried to catch up with the light beam that was running all over.  Mommy noticed what I was up to and told me that it was her watch face reflecting in the sun on the walls.  She told me that I would never catch it, but that did not stop me from trying.

I even found some fun when Mommy was making dinner last night.  When she wasn’t looking, I grabbed the cardboard box from the Au Gratin Potatoes off the counter and ran like the dickens down the hall! (Heck, I could be the “spokespuppy” for Giant Eagle)  Weeeeeeee, I got it!  And now it’s my job for Mommy not to get it back!  Ha, the fun begins as Mommy notices that I took it off the counter and she “tries” to get it back from me, but I am faster than her.  Back and forth I run, down the hall, around the kitchen table and back again and I still have the box!  Mommy ran down the hallway, I thought to chase after me, but she was running to get her camera.  Oh no, now I have to pose for a picture while playing keep away.  All I wanted to know is…. can I have some potatoes too?

I was also busy this week keeping our house safe & sound from any intruders while I was on “Neighborhood Watch Patrol” and I had my hands full.  There was a party the other night at a neighbors house and tons of people were running all over our yard (not using the sidewalk that was CLEARLY in front of them)  and all I kept doing was growling and barking at them.  Daddy even told a few of them to keep off the grass, but the incoherent party attendees smarted-off to Daddy.  (Jerks)  Daddy was telling them to stay off the lawn because we are trying to fix all the spots in the lawn where I pee’d and trying to get some grass growing, but they kept walking across the grass.  Mommy had a good idea that she should hide on the driveway and spray with the garden hose anyone who walked across the lawn, but she did not do it, but it would have been funny if she did.  (perhaps the drunk party goers would get the point, probably not though)  Anyhow, none of us got any sleep that night because every time I heard a car door, I was up growling out the window and waking Mommy & Daddy at the same time – there were even taxi cabs arriving at 3:30am that got me going again.  Geez, some people have no respect for others.  (and I needed my beauty sleep)

Also while I was on Neighborhood Watch, I was keeping track of the little baby deer that was left by its Mommy for a few days.  That baby deer was so tiny and walked kinda wobbly and we were wondering when its Mommy was going to come back and get it, not to mention when it was going to get some food & water.  Mommy walked across the street to check in on the little baby that found a nice shady spot to lay down in, and it looked really scared.  We hope it finally got reunited with their Mommy!

Not sure what I am going to get into this weekend, but I know that it will be a lot quieter since the roof job is all done, no more hammering!  Daddy will probably want to grill out and Mommy will work in the yard and make her flowers pretty!  I will definitely get some good photographs of me & keep you all up to date on what I’m doing!  Have a great weekend!

Light-Chasing Au Gratin Puppy,

Help Yourself to Happiness

I’ve come a long way Baby!

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a great weekend and got a chance to get outside a little before it rained…again.  I had the chance to do just that on Saturday with Daddy & Mommy and got to watch them make the yard look beautiful!  They even pulled the grill out of storage for the summer, and I remember this thing so well, because when I was “smaller”, I used to growl & bark at that thing!  I wasn’t sure what it was, so I growled like there was no tomorrow at that big thing.  (Mommy always laughed at me when I growled at the grill – she wondered what I was protecting her from, but she praised me anyways!)

When I look back at some of the silly things that I did, don’t do now, & still do, I chuckle at myself.  I “still” sniff in the fridge when Mommy or Daddy open up “that BIG white thing” because everything smells awesome to me, I “still” lick everything (and I mean everything) in the dishwasher when the door gets opened, I “don’t” accidentally pee in the house anymore (phew, Mommy says), I “do” bark out the front window when I hear another dog barking, I “still” bark at the towels hanging on our neighbors clothes line, I “will always” bark at garbage cans & the garbage man, I “still” love our UPS guy as he always gives me hugs and kisses when he stops by the house for pickups, I “have never” chewed up anything in the house that was not mine, (except I did take Mommy’s slippers a few times, until I was caught) I “still” love going bye bye in the car, I can do tricks “without” a treat (but would prefer them if you’re offering), I “still” love to be vacuumed, I “now” think that the BBQ container is out to get me, and I “always” have to sleep with my squeaky bone.

Mommy and I created this really neat collage (above) of me from the first day I was adopted, to me now, and boy have I grown!  I got weighed over the weekend and I am now 52.2 lbs.  We did our weekly trip to PetSmart to see all of my friends (and to scam some treats at the register too) and Daddy is looking into getting me a neat new halter that will help me walk better on a leash.  You see, I have a lot of power in my legs and I am pulling when we take walks, so Daddy & Mommy are looking into this neat new item to help me walk better without “taking them for a walk” & pulling so much.  We had a nice long discussion with one of the trainers at PetSmart (her name was Amber) and she suggested this item.  We might be picking it up this week (because they were out of them), so I will have to let you know how it works later.  Daddy also got me a new Nylabone because I love these things!  (thanks Daddy!)  And, the coolest thing that happened while we were in PetSmart, was that Mommy noticed a lady carrying a little puppy in the aisle we were in AND…..IT LOOKED JUST LIKE ME WHEN I WAS A LITTLE PUPPY!  Holy cow, we could not believe that her puppy looked just like me when I was born.  She said that she just adopted her puppy that day but did not pick out a name yet.  The puppy was a Collie and Sheppard mix.  We asked her to email us a photo of the puppy so we can post it in my blog. (hope she does)

Last, but not least, the APL emailed me this morning to remind me that this is THE LAST WEEK to collect donations for Doggy Dollars & Kitty Kash, as the online donations ends May 8th by 11:59pm.  No matter what denomination you would like to give, every little bit counts!  I am one of the results of what the APL can do for a puppy in need. (Thank you APL)

I’m Starting to Drool

Good morning everyone, hope all of you had a fabulous weekend, as usual, I always have great weekends because I get to spend every minute with Mommy & Daddy!  Today, I just turned NINE MONTHS OLD and I still can’t believe how much I have grown.  Just a blink of an eye ago, I was this little fluffy furball, and look at me now!  I remember way back when I could not even see out of the front window, now I can look out without jumping, and I remember riding in the front seat of the car and not being able to even see out the side window, and now…. I make so many “smudge” marks on the window to make Daddy buy stock in Windex.

Did you know that Nikitaland now has over 4,000 visitors? WOW!  My last blog post got over 90 visits alone, I must have written some great stuff to attract that many people!  Thanks for stopping by!  Make sure you share my blog with all your friends, as I am always trying to come up with great things to share with you.

My Auntie came over for dinner on Saturday and Mommy made everyone tortillas that I am assuming were yummy (as I did not get to try them), but the aroma in the kitchen was heaven.  I kept walking around in circles sniffing the air.  I did try to sneak up on their laps to see if I could get a lick of what was on their plate, but I was unsuccessful.  Heck, not even a morsel of hamburg or cheese, bummer!  Anyhow, after dinner, my Auntie played all night with me and threw my squeaky ball toys down the hallway for me to fetch.  (that was a lot of fun)  I can’t wait for my Auntie to come over again & see me.  Did you notice that my Auntie also likes “Pink”?

Did you know what my favorite time of the day is?  It’s when my Daddy says to me “Time for Bed“.  When my Auntie was over, Daddy wanted to show her what I do when he tells me “Time for Bed”.  I usually run around and try to find my big red squeaky bone, but I must have been trying to show off in front of Auntie, that I came running around the corner, into the kitchen, with my pillow in my mouth.  (Everyone laughed)  I must remember that “Pillow in mouth = huge amounts of laughter”.  I am one funny puppy ya know!

The day is still young, and after I take my morning nap, I’m heading to the bank with Mommy, then…. who knows what I will get into.  No matter what it is, I am sure that I will blog about it later!  What did you do this weekend?

Monday kisses to you, Nikita
