Changing Into Another Season

Summer is gone, but I am not even sure that we even had a Summer over here. This was a strange Summer as we did not have the typical temperatures we normally do. The garden suffered a little with all the rain we got, but it is still alive and producing all the Juliet Tomatoes we could ever wish for. The pepper plants are doing well and we have been enjoying all the home grown peppers in our meals.

JULIETS 8-23-14

Out of all the pumpkin plants that we had planted, we only got two pumpkins out of that entire batch. We are bummed, but we think that perhaps we planted too many in one area, so next year we will do half the amount. We could have had a few more pumpkins this year, as we had lots of pumpkin vines crawl up the back fence, then fell due to the weight of the growing pumpkins and the vines got cracked, and that did them in. By the way, the adorable “Pumpkin Patch” sign was a gift from our neighbor Steve! (Thank you Steve for such a wonderful gift!)

The Cleveland Browns beat St. Louis on Sunday 26-24 on their first home opener game, and they said that this is the first time in ten years that the Cleveland Browns won on a home opener. Amazing! It was a nail biter game, but a win is a win, and we’ll take it! I took advantage of cheering on the Browns to a win by dressing up our Skellie as he sat in the front yard waving to everyone who passed by the house. The funny thing is, is that when I brought Skellie into the house afterwards, I sat him at the kitchen table and left him there overnight. When I woke up the next morning, he scared the crap out of me because I thought someone was sitting at the table! LOL  (never will do that again)

With the changing of the seasons from Summer to Fall, we need to take advantage of this time of year and start clipping the seeds from all of our flowers and save them for next year. I have a huge supply of Marigold seeds that I have harvested & dried for next year already. Once your flowers die back, make sure you clip off the dried flower and extract the seeds. Let them sit out and dry thoroughly, then label a small baggie and place them in there for next year.

I hope to get a few more Fall Mums from the garden center because I want to place them in this wood box that I painted & stenciled for the front porch. My little yellow mailbox already adorns a nice purple mum too! One of my nice huge paper mache pumpkins is also on display here!

Nikita and Bella must know that the season has changed too, because all they pull out of their toy box are their Halloween toys! Their favorite one is the huge stuffed pumpkin that they always play tug-of-war with!

What is going on at your end of the world with the season changes? How are you enjoying the Fall season?

The Times Are Changing

As I sit here enjoying my second cup of coffee, I notice that the sleeves of my sweatshirt are covered with dog hair.  I just finished brushing Nikita outside as it is a nice cool crisp morning and thought that she would enjoy sitting on the porch with Mommy while getting groomed.  She loved it, and sat there so nicely on the porch watching the cars pass the house and a few morning walkers.  I can tell by the amount of hair I remove off of her that the seasons are changing, just like how we recently noticed that it is also getting darker outside earlier.  I even had to change the timer for the lights in the flower bed to come on a little earlier.  With this realization of the seasons changing, it kinda makes me sad.

Gosh, I remember just yesterday (well actually, a few months ago) how excited we were to finally start our very first garden, and now, the garden will be coming to an end in a month.  It was our first time gardening and we have learned quite a bit doing research, and learned a lot from our neighbor who also gardens and has the most incredible garden this year.  We know for sure that we will be picking his brain over the winter and will get help from him on how to start our tomato plants indoors for next year, because the tomatoes that we started indoors flopped.  They started off really nice and they appeared that they would be ok, but we failed miserably and they all passed away and we had to purchase more tomato plants.  What we find mind-blowing are the Juliet Tomato’s that our neighbor is growing.  He only has two of these plants in his garden, but they have produced probably hundreds of tomatoes!  We are amazed by what he has picked from these two plants in his garden.  The Juliet Tomato is a longer skinny tomato and a lot meatier, kinda the size of two cherry tomatoes.  So next year, we will probably not plant any cherry tomatoes, rather we will plant two Juliet plants and will have more tomatoes than we know what to do with – nice!

The times are a changing, just like the weather.  We have finally and thankfully got out of the 100 degree days where you could fry an egg on the driveway, to a more respectable temperature where you can cut the grass without sweating like a pig.   With the weather changing, it also gets us excited because we know that Halloween is just around the corner, under 80 days now.  Yeah!  And pretty soon we can pull out all of the wood tombstones that we made last year and proudly place them in the front graveyard.  We painted some funny things on our tombstones like “economy” which was painted in white on a black tombstone with red blood dripping from it, and we also painted a white tombstone with “high gas prices killed me” on it with a little red gas can on the front.  Everyone in our neighborhood just loved these tombstones and laughed every time they saw them.  Q:  What should we paint on our tombstones for this year?  Leave your comments below and let us know!

The month of August has been quite eventful for us, as Nikita got a bath at the beginning of the month before her Revolution treatment, and just like she does every week, she gets her teeth brushed too.  Yes, we brush our dogs teeth and you should too.  Brushing their teeth will help prevent gum disease, not to mention, will keep her pearly whites looking great!

Daddy and Mommy also took me to the APL for a visit one weekend, and I got to meet a couple of dogs.  One was a beautiful black german shepherd who did not like me and I huddled by Daddy for protection.  We found out that he did not get along with other dogs too well, but he has been adopted into a good home, so that is good to know.   Daddy and Mommy also went to a neighboring city to see a Pet Fair that was going on over the weekend and they got to meet a lot of nice dogs & puppies.  They also met a beautiful german shepherd named Rocky that was a police dog for the Cleveland Metroparks.  Rocky even had his own badge too on his collar which was so neat to see.

We also had a Staples truck driver who was making a delivery to our house, actually hit our mailbox while he was pulling away from the curb.  He ripped the mailbox door off and it is hanging now and the entire box is squished.  It took about a week for this to get taken care of, after numerous emails and phone calls, but now we found out that we can go out and get another mailbox and send Staples our receipt and they will reimburse us for the expense.  We are glad to hear that they will pay for another box, because with all the rain we have had lately, it stinks because the mail inside the box gets wet, not to mention that it could fall out of the box.

The Browns had their first pre-season game last Friday and they won!  Yeah!  We adorned our front door with our Browns banner and hope that it helps! Yeah, I know it does not actually count as a “win” but if you are a Browns fan, a W is a W whether or not it actually counts.  We’ll see what happens this year for the Browns as we got a new owner, so we’ll see what changes are in store for us!  Hopefully more “W’s”!  Maybe perhaps my driveway drawings are helping out!?  Daddy got Mommy a few cans of sidewalk chalk and she leaves Daddy messages all the time on the driveway to make him smile.  Then, when Daddy leaves for work in the morning, his backup monitor in his car will show the notes that we leave for him and hopefully it makes him smile when he leaves for the day!

How has your August been so far?  What have you been up to?  What plans do you have for the Fall?  Share with us!

The only thing that we need to figure out and we need to do this real soon, is what should Nikita be for Halloween?  Since we hand make all of her costumes, we need to start thinking about what to make for her.  Any suggestions?  Nikita was a Fairy for her first Halloween and we dressed her up in a pink tutu with a frilly pink collar made from felt and beads, and last year she was a Lion which was made from a brown baby blanket and white fur and felt.  Now, this year I am stumped at what she should be.  Perhaps we could dress her up like Madonna with pointed boobies?  Let us know what you think!

Almost Got Skunked!

It amazes me every Monday when I reflect back to my weekend on how much one dog can cram into three days.  I am on high alert for what goes on around here and I know when something does not belong or a stranger is lurking whom I have never seen before and I alert Daddy & Mommy to what I find.  But, when it’s time for bed and I hit those nice fluffy blankies, I am out like a light, feet up in the air, dead to the world and its surroundings.  And that has been a HUGE problem these past few days.  I have talked about all the deer we have around here a lot, and I do watch them from every window, but we have had some major damage to our yard over the last week and a half from the bucks!  They, for some reason, have chosen our yard to “Mark their Territory”, both the front yard and back, and they are making huge ruts in the lawn which has torn up the grass from one end of the yard to the other.

Deer Damage: Click on photo to enlarge

Pieces of grass and dirt chunks are strewn everywhere and now our once beautiful looking lawn, has turned into what it looks like “divots” from a golfer on a golf course.  (I didn’t hear the bucks yell “F O U R”, or I would have woke up)  Daddy & Mommy are really upset – the damage is done and it keeps happening.  Every morning we wake up and look outside, MORE ruts!  We started thinking that it was just our lawn until yesterday we noticed our neighbors lawn had ruts too, but that still does not make it right.

Daddy and Mommy did a whirlwind shopping trip on Saturday and stopped at some craft stores to see if they could find the supplies they need for Halloween.  They found these neat 3″ plastic letter stencils that they are going to use on their wood tombstones for epitaphs and the stencil font was called “Girls are Weird”.  Strange name, but the stencil font is cool.  Mommy was even practicing on paper to see how wide the words would get just to make sure they fit well on the tombstone.

And, speaking of tombstones……Daddy & Mommy finally surprised Grandma with the tombstone that they made for her.  She was blown away that we made her a Halloween decoration and she loved it!  She could not stop looking at it and giving them hugs!  Her tombstone was painted with gray primer first then a Krylon “Make it Stone” spray paint was applied to give it a stone texture and finally a clear coat was applied to seal it from the weather.  Grandma wanted her tombstone to be placed in her flower bed so she could see it from the house and enjoy it!  Glad you liked your tombstone Grandma!  We love you!

Anyhow, after Daddy & Mommy got back from their errands, they took me to PetSmart since I was good, and they felt bad that they left me alone earlier in the day.  That’s ok, I mostly slept on the bed while they were gone and watched a few cartoons too.  Well, on this particular trip to PetSmart, I was bad.  I would not listen and just kept running up to every person I saw like it was my first time out of the house.  Geez, what got into me?  I know Mommy was getting mad at me, but I could not stop.  All the PetSmart employees greeted me, as usual, when I entered the store and Jane and Amber fed me treats, one after the other.  I even saw some of the customers just standing there watching me and my antics and they laughed.  I also met this really nice couple whom I loved and they just kept petting me and hugging me.  Aw, they were so nice!   Also, Amber the PetSmart trainer even was chasing me around the store – man oh man did I love that!  She kept goofing with me every time she ran into me in the store.  (I love that kind of silliness!)  Mommy and I sat down and checked out all the kitties that were waiting to be adopted while Daddy snapped a good photo of us.  And, my best bud Brett was grooming some doggies (who did not look like they were having any fun) and he came out real quick to see me & give me hugs!  Gotta love Brett!

Now, comes the interesting part of the weekend… Mommy and Me almost got skunked…..twice!  Yep, you heard that right!  Once on Saturday night and again on Sunday night.  Mommy took me out for my last bathroom break of the day and when we came around the corner of the house, a skunk was walking towards us on the grass, then turned around real quick (because we startled it) and Mommy did some quick thinking and grabbed me and we ran super fast back into the house.  My little heart was beating like crazy on the landing and she gave me a hug to calm me down.  What just happened I was thinking and Daddy asked that too and we told him that we just ran into Pepe le Pew outside.  He said “Oh Man” and could not believe it, because we have not seen any skunks out here at all, until today.  Then, it happened again on Sunday night, the exact same scenerio…. went outside for my last pee break and WHAM…. that skunk was in the exact same spot we saw it the night before, and….we did the same thing… R U N!   That is one thing that we are for sure that we don’t want to get sprayed by.  Who would hug me then?  I would smell badly.

What a weekend I had, just packed with fun & excitement (only if you can call almost being skunked twice as excitement), but we are glad that the Cleveland Browns WON yesterday!  YIPPEE, yes we know it was only by a point and in the last seconds on the clock, but a WIN is a WIN and we’ll take it!  Way to go Brownies!  And, if that is still not enough stuff crammed into a weekend, Mommy also painted her wood “EEK” letters and finished them with a nice clear coat.  I hope everyone had a fun filled weekend like I did…what will happen next?
